SVHC Candidate List extended to 224 substances
The list has recently added a new entry, N-(hydroxymethyl) acrylamide, due to its carcinogenic and mutagenic properties.
The Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern - SVHC contains a list of chemicals that are considered harmful to the environment and to human health. These substances may be eventually placed on the Authorisation List and, therefore, its use would be prohibited unless companies apply for authorisation.
Due to the potential danger of these substances companies have the obligation to manage the risks and to provide their customers and consumers with enough information to use them safely.
In June of this year, the list added a new entry, the N-(hydroxymethyl) acrylamide. Let´s see why.
4 facts about N-(hydroxymethyl) acrylamide
- ● Substance Identity
- EC / List number: 213-103-2
- CAS number: 924-42-5
- Molecular formula: C4H7NO2
- ● Reasons for its inclusion
- a) According to the harmonised classification and labelling, this substance may cause genetic defects, cancer and may cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure.
- b) Additionally, the classification provided by companies to ECHA in REACH registrations identifies that this substance is toxic if swallowed, is suspected of damaging fertility or the unborn child and may cause an allergic skin reaction.
- ● Common uses
- As a monomer for polymerisation, as a fluoroalkyl acrylate copolymer, and in paints and coatings.
- ● New legal obligations
- Importers and producers of articles will have to notify ECHA if their article contains N-(hydroxymethyl) acrylamide within six months from the date it has been included in the list, that is, from 10 June 2022. Suppliers will also have to provide their customers with a safety data sheet.
