ECHA CHEM: the new European platform for accessing chemical substance information

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) is responsible for protecting human health and the environment by ensuring the safe use of chemical substances. To achieve this, ECHA carries out technical, scientific and administrative tasks related to European chemical legislation (REACH, CLP, BPR and others) and provides support, tools and guidance to both companies and the general public.

To make this information more accessible and unified, ECHA has launched ECHA CHEM, its new centralized public database on chemical substances. This platform is progressively replacing the previous “Chemical substances search” tool and aims to offer clearer, more consistent and up to date information for companies, researchers, authorities and citizens.

What does ECHA CHEM offer?

ECHA CHEM integrates several modules that provide essential information for the evaluation and management of chemical substances:

1. REACH dossiers

These dossiers include information submitted by manufacturers and importers, such as:

  • Physicochemical and toxicological properties: melting and boiling point, density, solubility, reactivity, human toxicity and ecotoxicity, among others. The information is presented in a summarized form, including references, test conditions and key results.

  • Industrial and commercial uses: details on how a substance is used throughout its life cycle, from production to disposal.

  • REACH registration documentation: references, test conditions and key results offering a complete overview of each substance.

All this information is assessed by ECHA and, where necessary, by the competent authorities of the Member States.

2. Classification and Labelling (CLP)

This section provides hazard classification elements according to the CLP Regulation (Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008), including:

  • Harmonised classifications agreed by ECHA or Member States.

  • Classifications from REACH registration dossiers, when the substance has been registered under Regulation (EU) 2020/878 (REACH).

  • Classifications notified by companies, which may vary depending on use and concentration.

3. Regulatory obligations

This module indicates whether a substance is subject to specific measures under EU legislation, such as:

  • Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC).
  • Annex XIV: substances subject to prior authorisation.
  • Annex XVII: restrictions on manufacturing, placing on the market or use.
  • Other relevant legislation, such as the Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR), RoHS, PIC or WEEE.
  • Information on hazards, restrictions and risk management measures.

This enables users to easily check the regulatory status of a substance, its associated risks, legal obligations and key technical documents.

Why is ECHA CHEM important for companies in the chemical sector?

For manufacturers, distributors or importers of chemical substances and mixtures, the platform is a key resource offering:

  • Greater efficiency: no need to consult multiple databases separately.
  • Regulatory transparency: public access to classifications, uses, restrictions and legal requirements.
  • Improved compliance: supports the updating of safety data sheets, labels and other legal obligations.

Since when has ECHA CHEM been available, and what information does it include?

ECHA CHEM has been fully available since late 2025, offering access to all REACH registrations, C&L notifications, harmonised classifications, regulatory processes and obligation lists. The platform provides a coherent and comprehensive dataset that helps companies manage chemical substances safely and comply with applicable legislation at all times.

How SIAM and CHEMETER integrate ECHA CHEM information
