When it comes to safety in the use of chemical products, the UFI code (Unique Formula Identifier) has become an essential element. This 16-character alphanumeric code is not only a legal requirement, it is also a vital tool for protecting the health of users and facilitating the work of emergency services. This new label element will be mandatory in the European Economic Area (EEA) from January 2025.
The UFI is a mandatory code that must appear on the labels of products containing hazardous mixtures. Its main function is to enable poison centres to quickly and accurately identify the exact composition of a product in the event of poisoning or an accident.
This code is linked to a specific formula, not to the commercial product. In other words, if several products share the same formula, they may have the same UFI.

The UFI must be included on the labelling of all hazardous chemical mixtures marketed in the European Economic Area (EEA), in compliance with the CLP Regulation. However, products composed of a single substance that are not classified as hazardous or that only present hazards to the environment are exempt from this obligation. Even so, many companies choose to include it voluntarily to facilitate traceability or to anticipate possible changes in product classification.
The UFI code must be clearly displayed on the product label, together with the hazard information. In the case of unpackaged products or products for industrial use, where it is not mandatory to include it on the label or packaging, the UFI must be displayed on the Safety Data Sheet.
It is essential that the supplier first submits a complete notification to the poison centre via the ECHA's PCN (Poison Centres Notification) portal before marketing the product.
The person responsible for generating the UFI is the formulator of the mixture. This may be the manufacturer, importer or distributor, depending on who modifies the composition of the product. Our SDS software, Chemeter, allows you to generate it quickly and easily by combining the operator's CIF number with a formulation number.
The UFI is directly linked to the exact composition of the mixture. Therefore, it is mandatory to generate a new code and submit a new notification in the following general cases:
However, there are minor exceptions, which can be found in Annex VIII of the CLP Regulation or in the guidance prepared by ECHA.
Failure to include the UFI may result in penalties and, more seriously, may hinder medical care in an emergency. Furthermore, it is an essential requirement for marketing chemical products in the European Union. It is therefore essential to make and keep our notifications up to date at all times, using tools that streamline this process, such as the PCN module available in Chemeter.
