EU-Updates-Its-REACH-Restrictions-Roadmap

The European Commission has updated the REACH Restrictions Roadmap, a document providing an overview of restrictions already adopted, initiatives currently under evaluation, and groups of substances that may be subject to future regulatory measures. The update offers companies a valuable reference point to anticipate potential impacts on their products and supply chains.

The new version of the roadmap reflects the progress of initiatives aimed at limiting the use of substances of concern within the European Union and confirms the trend towards an increasingly preventive approach based on groups of substances.

Among the restrictions already adopted by the European Union since 2022 are:

  • Restrictions affecting certain substances of very high concern (SVHCs) and CMR substances.
  • Selected Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs).
  • PFAS for specific uses.
  • Microplastics.
  • Other groups of substances identified due to risks to human health or the environment.

The update also includes several initiatives that are currently in the decision-making phase before European authorities:

  • Lead used in ammunition and fishing tackle.
  • New groups of CMR substances.
  • Certain substances used in childcare products.
  • Skin sensitising, irritating, or corrosive substances used in textiles and leather.

In addition, several proposals remain in the consultation and evaluation phase by the scientific committees of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA):

  • Octocrylene in certain cosmetic products.
  • The universal PFAS restriction.
  • Certain chromium compounds used in industrial applications.

The roadmap also identifies various substances and groups of substances that could be included in future regulatory initiatives, including:

  • Non-polymeric aromatic brominated flame retardants.
  • Bisphenols with potential endocrine-disrupting properties.
  • p-Phenylenediamine-derived substances.
  • Certain PVC groups and their additives.
  • Formaldehyde.
  • Nickel.
  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).
  • Pyrazoles and other chemical groups currently under assessment.

Although the inclusion of a substance in the roadmap does not imply an immediate restriction, it does represent an important indication of the future regulatory priorities of the European Commission. For this reason, the document has become a strategic regulatory monitoring tool for manufacturers, importers, and downstream users who need to assess potential regulatory risks, substitution alternatives, and future compliance requirements in advance..

At Siam, we help companies anticipate the impact of regulatory initiatives arising from the REACH Regulation in the European Union. Through Chemeter, our clients can monitor substances subject to restriction processes, assess impacts on formulations and products, and prepare compliance strategies aligned with the priorities identified by the European Commission and ECHA, reducing regulatory risks and facilitating continued access to the European market.
