OSHA has announced a four month extension to all compliance dates associated with the 2024 update to the Hazard Communication Standard, giving industry additional time to review new guidance materials and adjust their systems accordingly.
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued a final rule on January 15, 2026, extending all transition deadlines related to the update of the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS). This extension applies to manufacturers, importers, distributors, and employers, and responds to the need for more time to publish and review essential technical guidance required for the implementation of the standard.
The original HCS update, published on May 20, 2024, aligned the U.S. regulation with GHS Revision 7 and incorporated certain elements of Revision 8 , establishing a phased transition schedule. The delayed publication of the guidance documents has made it necessary to shift all scheduled dates by four months , while keeping the original phased timeline intact.
For manufacturers, importers, and distributors
For employers (workplace labelling, procedures, and training)
The extension, effective upon publication, provides companies with additional time to align labels and safety data sheets with GHS Revision 7 and elements of Revision 8, update internal systems and hazard communication procedures, and train staff within the new transition periods.
