EN-ISO-16321-The-New-Benchmark-in-Eye-Protection

The EN ISO 16321 standard redefines eye protection criteria, introducing stricter requirements to enhance safety and worker well-being in high-risk environments. This update marks a milestone in the industry, ensuring that equipment meets the highest international standards.

EN ISO 16321: What is its purpose?

Its goal is to establish international criteria for the manufacturing and certification of eye and face protectors, guaranteeing greater protection against impacts, particles, radiation, and other hazards present in industrial settings. This update responds to technological advances and the growing diversity of work environments, which required unifying previously fragmented requirements into a more solid and coherent framework.

EN ISO 16321: What are the key changes?

Among the most significant updates:

  • More rigorous tests to assess mechanical strength and optical quality.
  • Evaluation of compatibility with other personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Inclusion of specific requirements for different scenarios: heavy industry, radiation work, chemical environments.
  • Clear classification of protector types: safety glasses, face shields, and helmet combinations.

EN ISO 16321: Who does it affect?

It mainly affects manufacturers, distributors, and professional users who rely on eye and face protection in environments with physical, chemical, or radiological risks. It also impacts companies that must ensure regulatory compliance during audits and certifications.

EN ISO 16321: Why is it important for businesses?

Complying with this standard not only guarantees worker safety but also ensures conformity with international standards, reducing legal risks and strengthening product trust. Additionally, it offers key benefits such as greater protection and reduced eye injuries, improved comfort and ergonomics, and regulatory compliance that avoids penalties and reinforces the company’s quality image.

EN ISO 16321: How does it affect SDS?

The regulatory update also impacts Section 8 of Safety Data Sheets, where control measures and recommended personal protective equipment are specified. With the implementation of EN ISO 16321, it will be necessary to indicate that eye and face protectors comply with this standard, replacing previous references to EN 166:2001.

EN ISO 16321: When does it take effect?

As of November 11, 2025, EN ISO 16321-1 becomes the only valid reference for new certifications in both the UK and the EU, replacing EN 166:2001, which will no longer apply in certification processes.

However, products already certified under EN 166:2001 may continue to be marketed until their certification expires, with a maximum validity of five years from the date of issuance.

At Siam we closely monitor every regulatory update to provide our clients with solutions aligned with the most demanding standards. Our commitment is to guarantee safety, quality, and compliance in every product and service.
